Drawing from a collection of local, national and international mixtapes that includes (but not limited to) the following electronic music genres and sub-genres: HI-NRG, Italo Disco, early 80s House, 90s Industrial, Freestyle, Early Breaks, 90s New Wave, House, Techno, Tech House, Drum ‘n Bass, Trance, Hardcore, Happy Hardcore, Breakbeat, Goa, West Coast House, Speedcore, etc., Full Spectrum's very own LGA transmits for the evening well-crafted mixtape sets from some of the best DJs he's come across over the years as a collector, all in their original cassette tape format!

You will hear what was once considered cutting edge but still remains fresh to the ears – an electronica history lesson for all. Basically, it's BACK TO BASICS!

Is Luis playing vinyl at HFTM? He hasn’t so far. But anything can happen for this special Saturday edition. He’s definitely pondering playing some revolutionary electronic tunes in their entirety for the beginning of the night. So come out early for this one, grab yourself a beer or one of the wonderful Maria's cocktails and get ready to be sound phucked. Because there are no “fillers” in Luis’ music collection.

And IF you have a mixtape from those early days, come bring it by, and we’ll see about playing it…

THE MACHINE FOR THE EVENING

A TASCAM 302 Double Auto Reverse Cassette Deck (The BEAST which has never eaten up any of Luis' tapes!)

This bad boy has built-in Dolby HX Pro sound technology which extends frequency response and minimizes distortion on Normal, Metal or CrO2 tape. The 302 permits fine adjustment of high frequency response and possesses Dolby B and C noise reduction. Frequency response: 25 Hz to 20 kHz using high quality Metal tape.

The unit consist of two fully independent cassette decks housed in one 3U rack-mountable enclosure. Both decks have independent sets of interface connectors, transport control keys, noise reduction functions, LED peak meters and more, capable of recording both independently or simultaneously. With Control I/O and Cascade, the 302 can link with up to ten additional machines. (You got that, Charlie?)

The machine even has separate pitch controls for each deck and independent outs — so you can literally mix with it! Craziness…

In June, Full Spectrum was thrilled to supply an evening's worth of electronic dance music @ "Maria's" taken from LGA's very own stash of mixtapes from various DJ artists dating from 1984 - 2001. Live recordings of house music and disco mixes from the now defunct Chicago radio station "WBMX" were played; alternative beats from an XLII 100 tape were dished out; an acid techno tape by DJ Tron (R.I.P.) was cranked out at the end; and even a local DJ legend (Victor Lua) dropped by with something that had come from a shoebox stash in true D.I.Y. spirit! Incredible...

This all happened @ Maria's, a Chicago spot that gives you some of the best beer in town, incredible cocktails by superb mixologists, boutique whiskey, gin and vodka spirits, and a warm and eclectic vibe.

Everyone had so much fun that we're doing it again!

Thursty, July 21st: HURRAY FOR THE MIXTAPE 2! @ Maria's

What is it about? (We're repeating this below -- in case you didn't get the memo...)

For the last 25 years or so, Luis has been collecting electronic music in vinyl, tape, CD, and digital form, with a focus on electronic dance music such as HI-NRG, Italo Disco, early House, Industrial, New Wave, House, Techno, Tech House, Drum 'n Bass, Trance , Hardcore, Happy Hardcore, Breakbeat, Goa and so forth.

The story goes that his father bought him his first cassette tape which included Newcleus' "Jam on It" in the summer of 1984 in Chicago's Maxwell Street Flea market right after Luis first heard the song and watched a group of Chicago breakers (on a flattened cardboard box) "poppin'" "lockin'" and "spinnin'" to the electrified beat. Finding that nothing else quite awakened Luis like the sounds of electronic music, his father encouraged the boy by later on purchasing for him a 10-pack cassette box set to record whatever he liked. And late into the night Luis did just that, recording DJ sets from "Armando's ain't no jive dance party" off the legendary Chicago radio station 102.7 FM WBMX, eventually landing him in vinyl junkie heaven (Chicago's Loop Records and Importes Etc.) where he would put in his hours to amass his current wax collection and begin his DJ artistry by simply listening to the coolest sounds of the underground and the wise advice of the older generation shopping there. (Oh, how he made his mother wonder when he would return home in late at night on his Kent banana seat bike on a Saturday night.)

In the 90s, Luis discovered the rave scene (or, shall we say, the rave scene discovered him), and having already begun a mixtape collection of DJ sets from various Chicago DJ artists representing various genres, Luis added to this collection when he began producing raves from the ground up and would travel across the Midwestern States and sometimes to places as far away as New Orleans and Toronto, promoting his events and vending DJ mixes, as well as trading tapes and CDs of DJ sets with other vendors such as JJ of Untranslatable, Matt Massive of Massive Magazine, and later on, Ken of Pure Acid Mixtapes out of Los Angeles.

On Thursday, July 21st, Luis will again be showcasing some of his favorite mixtapes for the night. In the coming days, he will also hunt down what stashes some of his DJ friends might have...Make sure to bring YOUR open ears and packaged goods. As any DJ will tell you, a dream tape can lead to a lot of places.

DANNY LIVEWIRE
aka THE LIVEWIRE

The Livewire is an intricate part of Chicago’s dance music community. As a DJ, Producer, Promoter, VJ and all around Electronic Artist; he plays an exciting style that incorporates the best elements of house, experimental, electro, and techno.

He has established himself as a fundamental player of a growing society inside the city where house music was born. The Livewire was the once Station Manager of WZRD Chicago 88.3 fm, where his radio-station has been a beacon for new sounds and movements of the underground. His radio-show featured weekly with revolutionary political commentary, innovative mixing, live interviews/performances, and banging tunes from all across the globe.

Producing dance music in Chicago has given him the chance to work with some of the best in the business.Cajual/Relief Records, Prosthetic Pressings, and Kompute Musik are just some of the labels that he belongs to. He also used to promote raves with The Treehouse Collective, electro dance parties with The Android Kult, and artistic expression with Hi-Fi Hearts.

A label is only a name though, and his real purpose is to push forward the evolution of art and technology. His sound has evolved from initially being a live pa techno artist, to now being a full-fledged DJ/Producer. Under the mentorship of Green Velvet, his dance music sound bangs as hard as it is lush.

While sound and music is his main thing, he is also known to make an appearance as a VJ, and on the rare occasion perform VJing and DJing at the same time!

LUIS GABRIEL AGUILERA

For over 20 years, Luis Gabriel Aguilera (LGA) has helped shape Chicago's electronic dance music scene. Beginning in the late 1980s, Luis' active membership with one of the city's then party crews – Ultimate Party Crew – helped in the production of various house and hall parties on Chicago's South Side. A budding vinyl junkie DJ, Luis would also support the early electronic dance music movement by being present to; collecting; and promoting the different dance music genres of the times: early Chicago House, HI-NRG, New Wave, Industrial, etc., knowing well that if one wants to keep good things around, one must nurture them.

In the early 1990s, leaving the insularity of his South Side roots (but not entirely abandoning or dismissing them) and drawn by the more inclusive and global Rave scene, Luis began that bizarre journey that numerous fellow ravers have traversed, eventually landing him as a rave promoter from 1995 – 2001 under the organization moniker of Full Spectrum, which produced notable events such as Bonkers and No Place Like Home with fellow promoters Matt Positive, Izzy One and Josh Grant. Simultaneously, Luis began to dj Happy Hardcore, Techno and Acid Techno across the Midwest and in places like Toronto and Costa Rica. Meanwhile, the University of Chicago alumnus also published Gabriel's Fire (University of Chicago Press, 2000), a memoir recounting Aguilera's more impressionable experiences growing up as an immigrant urban youth—a must read for electronic music aficionados, the urban interested and the every day spiritual seeker.

Currently, Aguilera is playing with one of his other roots: his annual summertime travels to Mexico beginning at thirteen, with the summertime monthly installments of La Poderosa @ Sonotheque. Besides the sounds back home, the early Rock/Pop en Español movement he found in Mexico City, Guanajuato and the beaches of Acapulco and Mazatlan at that tender age heavily influenced Aguilera musically, culturally and spiritually. It wasn’t long before the relaxed, yet festive, Latino vibe fused with the gritty Chicago nightlife he knew and loved. With La Poderosa, LGA is, more than anything, sharing the sounds and moods of a time that were remarkable not only for him but millions of other Latinos present to it in some form who recognized one of the most beautiful gifts given to us: community. But not simply a nostalgic vehicle, with Latin America today vibing electronica, it is time for Luis to come full circle and bring this too to home sweet home Chicago. ¡Que siga la fiesta!
